Sultana was totally unaware that she had a second uterus and there were two twins in it.
A Bangladeshi woman gives birth to twins, only one month after giving birth to a premature baby boy.
The event experienced by Arifa Sultana was delivered by her doctor to the BBC. Doctors say the 20-year-old woman gave birth to a premature baby at the end of February. But 26 days later he was rushed to the hospital after experiencing abdominal pain.
The team of doctors who handled it discovered that Sultana was still pregnant. "As soon as the patient arrives, we do an examination and it turns out he is pregnant with twins," said Sheila Poddar, one of the doctors who handled Sultana.
The incident experienced by Sultana was possible because she had two wombs, one of which was two twins. "We are of course very surprised. Based on our experience, this has never happened before," said Doctor Poddar.
Doctors take emergency steps by performing a cesarean section
Sultana gave birth to her first baby at Khulna Medical College Hospital in Khulna District, while the second delivery took place at Ad-din Hospital in Jessore District. It is unknown why Sultana chose two different hospitals to give birth to her baby.
Doctor Poddar said Sultana and her husband were "very poor" and had never had an ultrasound before giving birth to their first baby.
"So, he did not know at all if he had two twins, in addition to the first baby he gave birth to (at the end of February)," explained Doctor Poddar.
Twins, one male and one female, were born healthy and no complications were found. Sultana and her two twin babies were allowed to go home after about four days in the hospital.
"Mother and two babies are healthy. We, the doctors, are certainly very happy and satisfied everything is going well," said Doctor Poddar.
Obstetrician in Singapore, Christopher Ng, said that a mother could have two wombs. He said this was not something rare.
Doctor Ng explained if only Sultana had an ultrasound examination, it would have been known that he had two wombs.
But because Sultana is from a poor rural family, a large ultrasound examination is likely to be very difficult to access.
According to Doctor Ng, at the time of ovulation Sultana took out three eggs and all three were fertilized at the same time which then produced three embryos.
Sultana likes to have three babies at the same time but is worried about the costs of raising and raising them, he told the AFP news agency.
Her husband is a rude worker and only receives around Rp1.3 million per month. "This is a miracle from Allah, the three babies when they were healthy. I will do my best to look after and care for them," said Sultana..
